Meadowlands Volunteer-driven Cleanups Start Sunday

In response to Superstorm Sandy, the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission and the Bergen County Audubon Society are sponsoring a series of cleanups in parks and natural areas in the region.

The first is scheduled for this Sunday (Nov. 18) from 10 a.m. to noon at Harrier Meadow in North Arlington.

We will be picking up trash and recyclables – glass bottles, metal cans and plastics -- in this 70-acre natural area, where huge amounts of debris were deposited by the storm.

Important information -- including two more scheduled cleanups -- follows.

We are also planning clean-ups on this site on Friday, Nov. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon, and on Sunday, Nov. 25, from 10 a.m. to noon.

We plan to work at Mill Creek Marsh in Secaucus and other sites in the future.

The Meadowlands Commission is providing coffee and doughnuts to volunteers.

Participants must wear work gloves and protective clothing and footwear and sign a liability release. The release will be available on Sunday, and is ready for download now (scroll down).

 Participants must be at least 16 years old; 16- and 17-year-old participants must have the liability release signed by a parent or guardian.
